A blind reporter from Samoa has called on website designers to consider people with no vision when designing their websites.
Faaolo Utumapu is a reporter and researcher for Independent Samoa's TV One and 89.1 FM, which are both owned by Samoa Quality Broadcasting. Prior to that, she was a field reporter for Apia based Radio Polynesia and an interpretor for the Samoa Parliament, providing instant translations from Samoan into English.
Faaolo spoke at PacINET 2011 on behalf of the Nuanua o le Alofa (NOLA), a non-government organization that advocates for people with disabilities in Apia. Her participation at PacINET2011 was sponsored by AusAID, Australia's overseas aid organisation. She spoke about the impact of technology on people with disabilities. She said that the internet has really bridged the gap in terms of blind people getting immediate access to printed material. She said before, they had to wait for ages to have the materials translated to braile. But reading software programs like the one she uses for work, has made it possible for people like her to get access to printed material quicker. But she says webpages dont always meet the needs of people with special needs.
More information about designing websites that can be viewed by people with disabilities can be found at www.w3c.org.
