Discussion on Day 4 of the Conference
Introduction
A conference of 200 people from different Pacific islands actively involved in GIS and RS gives the opportunity to discuss methods of GIS and RS application, which work well in Europe and North America but need adaptation and development to be deployed in Pacific Island Countries. A discussion will be held again at the end of the Conference. The discussion will be documented on the PICISOC website and followed up by the special interest group on GIS&RS within the PICISOC. The time windows for each topic will be announced in the Conference schedule. Each topic will be introduced by a PPT presentation and prior to the Conference status and development will be discussed on GIS-PacNet.
This year, there will be four persons on the panel guiding the discussion:
a) Prof. Tuan Chen, representative of ISPRS,
b) Conway Pene USP, PICISOC,
c) Wolf Forstreuter SOPAC, PICISOC,
d) (changing) a specialist who is involved in the specific topic
So far there are 11 topics (the discussion on GIS-PacNet might increase the number) listed below.
Topics of Discussion
1) Digital Terrain Model for Small Islands
Subtopics: RTK GPS utilisation, LiDAR, stereo cameras on ballons etc.
2) Utility GIS and System Integration
Subtopics: Modelling position of transformers, consumption analysis within GIS environment, calculating conductor size (pipe diameter), fuse size, etc.
3) Water Catchment Monitoring, Geo Hazard Mapping
Subtopics: DTM generation at 1:25,000 and 1:50,000 scale, overlay analysis in raster data environment, landslide susceptibility, flood mapping
4) Application and techniques for Large Scale Mapping
Subtopics: rainwater harvest, census mapping, disaster recovery survey
5) Shallow Water Bathymetry with Satellite Images
6) Ocean Monitoring
Subtopics: ocean colour, sea surface temperature, wave hight, etc.
7) Radar Application for Mapping Extent of Flooding and Coastal Change
8) Radar Application for Fishing Vessel Detection
Subtopics: vessel outline, vessel velocity, vessel material
9) Image Pre-Processing? for Pacific Island Users
Subtopics: image stitching and mosaicing, conversion 16 bit to 8 bit data range, object specific contrast enhancement, haze removal, atmospheric correction, image archiving, geometric correction using reference image points
10) Vegetation Mapping
Subtopics: vegetation stratification using texture information of pan-sharpened image data, haze influence of mountain lee side, species composition and radiometric signature
11) Open Source and Proprietary Software
Subtopics: database software, GIS software, image analysis software
