02/05/06 - 1994: Jurgen Nordqvist of Digital Technologies set up a bulletin board for 10 local enthusiasts. This was a free service using a 2400bps modem. He lives in Australia, not sure how to contact him.

Fiji

02/05/06 - When I came in 93 in Fiji, we had a uucp link to Noumea, IRD( ORSTOM then) to exchange e-mails. That was set up by the previous french cooperant. At the time, USP had already a full time link to Waikato University, and was using a mail only link before that (I guess uucp too).

Al Blake and I did Email over PEACESAT here very early on, again I would have to dig that up, but I think by that time Internet was sort of established here, anwyay will dig around.

03/05/06 - Just before Bruce E was a SPREP mail only setup with mailruns three times a day. Around 1994/95 the National University was getting email from this SPREP setup. It was being managed by a lady Wanda Ieremia then.

Vanuatu

02/05/06 - For Vanuatu, I was first and www.vanuatu.net.vu was the domain that 'activated' the .vu domain space.
The first connection was a 9.6k modem dialing internationally to get a connection through America On Line in order to get out on to the 'net'.
The telephone bill for the first month came to $US25,000 - expensive surfing - but hey - it was the first !

02/05/06 - Just an additional explanation. .VU was first registered by FFA under Dorosday's name as Administrator through a partnership FFA had with Connect.com.au of Australia. She was Director of Fisheries at the time. Then the govt wanted .VU transferred to the telco and even though I presented to the Hon Minister at the time that best practice was to keep .VU admin separate from the telco, the minister wanted it otherwise, and Dorosday signed over .VU admin.

02/05/06 - I could probably pin it done to the very first day and hour if I searched around. The first website went up on Feb 26th 1996. The first connection was sometime early to mid 1995.
At the time www.vanuatu.net.vu went online, there were around 200 website containing 'vanuatu info', none of them maintained by anyone living in Vanuatu and nothing of course under the .vu.
The second site to go up was a kiwi who served a site called vannet.com.vu, I think this may have been the first one TVL registered here. It was the 'second' vanuatu 'owned' website but disappeared about a year after starting.
