How the loss of Intelsat804 since 15/01/2004 affected Pacific Islands countries.
This information is anecdotal based on reports from members, it may not be fully accurate. Read also this article from Dan.
Communication between Samoa and American Samoa is through microwave.
Other islands (7 e/stations) took more time with the quickest up within 2 days as we had to organise a couple of charters to reach them. They were assigned bandwidth on 183E as 180E became full, the last of them were brought online yesterday.
Another 3 e/stations remain out of service, 2 of them need a 3 day ship charter to reach, the other needs re-equiping to work on the 183E beam assigned.(21/01/2004)
Internet was restored after 3.5 days on 183E.
Luckilly there are 2 satellite antenna in Rarotonga, 1 for 180E NZ international voice, the other for national voice data and International
Internet.
Main link now connected to Newskies
Connection to some outer islands via satellite are still affected (19/01/2004)
Still some iissues with the SITA link (airline reservations)
We lost the receive signal from 180 E several times overnight and this morning (21/01/2004). As we have no automatic antenna control unit (ACU), our dish is not symetrical and 180 E is not as stable as 174 E was, we are going to manually check signal levels every few hours - and make adjustments to the azimuth manually if necessary - until we get a functioning ACU. (Or until 174 E 're-appears'.)
Main link connected now to Intelsat 701
New Caledonia lost all international voice circuits and leased lines for about 1 1/2 days, all work fine since then.
The internet in New Caledonia was still working since the local Telco had two alternative suppliers for Internet.
Still waiting for other carriers to get frequency assignments from Intelsat." (19/01/2004)
Cellular services from and to New Zealand are down 19/01/2004
"SamoaTel is still working on it at the moment. As stated before we can only forward 70% of calls overseas at the moment while awaiting final preparations to make sure we are back to normal." (19/01/2004)
Communication between the Samao and American Samoa is through microwave.
Telephony - no information
Funafuti Telephony came back online Thursday/Friday 20/21 January 2004, but no to the outer islands.
Outer Islands phone links to other islands and internationally, are still out.
Still some iissues with the SITA link (airline reservations) fixed (20/01/2004)
