Thursday Night Curry (TNC)

Table of contents

What is it?

A gathering of PICISOC members and friends over Indian cuisine.

What happens during TNC?

We eat, we drink, we discuss and we debate.
Usually we have an invited speaker who will provide a short talk on a chosen topic, and this is then discussed over dinner.

What topics are discussed?

Anything and everything of interest. Sometimes related to ICT, sometimes vaguely related to ICT, sometimes not related to ICT at all. To see what will be discussed at the next TNC, see the section titled TNC Events

Who can attend?

Anyone and everyone. You do not need to be a member of PICISOC to attend. And yes, you can bring your friends and colleagues. If you are a non-member, we hope you will consider joining PICISOC at the end of the night. We are really nice people (and besides membership is free in the Global Member category).

Where is it held?

Suva

The Suva TNC is held at The Copper Chimney. This is located at Amy Street in Toorak. Telephone +679 331 5916. The manager/owner's name is Manhar and his mobile number is +679 992 5917 if you are unsure of location or need assistance. Mention the Internet Society meeting and he will know.

When is it?

Usually the 2nd Thursday of every month. But check TNC Events for details.

How much does it cost?

At the end of the night, the bill is divided equally between the number of people present minus one. Minus one because the speaker does not pay on the night he/she is speaking. Everyone pays the same amount, regardless of how much they eat and/or drink. So if there are 11 people at a TNC and the bill is $150, each person (excluding the speaker) pays $15. The math is 150/(11-1).

What if I join the TNC late?

You still pay as per the rule above.

What if I leave early?

You still pay before you leave. The cost will be FJD 30.00 (for TNC Suva) and you will give this to the designated Sahib for the night. Any excess amount will be deposited into the PICISOC bank account to offset shortages (if we eat and drink way too much) on other nights, or to help in the good work PICISOC does wink

What if I don't eat and/or drink?

You still pay as per the rule(s) above, so you might as well eat and drink with us.

Can I attend as an "Observer"?

Sure. But you still pay as above.

Why does everyone have to pay the same amount even though they may not eat or drink as much as others?

Because we said so. And because we don't want to spend an hour every night micro-managing who ate and drank what.

Do I need to book?

Not really, but it is always nice to know how many people will be coming, so that we can advise the restaurant if we need lots of space. Let the Sahib know if you are coming.

What/who is the Sahib?

This is the lovely person in charge of TNC for that night. The Sahib will introduce the speaker and collect money from the attendees leaving early, and anything else they are given responsibility for.

How does one become Sahib?

Attaining the position of Sahib is a long and tedious process, requiring many months of hard work and dedication. A formal application process is involved. Contact the PICISOC Secretariat for further details.

Is there going to be a fork?

Since there are some FOSS people involved, and since they like forking so much, we may look at forking to "Thursday Night Chinese" at some stage on some nights.

Is there a Mailing List for the die-hard TNC fan?

Of course, you can subscribe to the TNC Suva list here [|coming soon]

Where else can I attend a TNC?

Quite a few places around the world. See the main TNC website here

Can I start a TNC in my city/town/country?

Sure! We would love you to. Please contact the TNC Organisers or the PICISOC Secretariat for more information.
